Why we commissioned this piece.

Brittany

Sam Rodriguez

2020-07-15

Why we commissioned this piece.

WNBA point guard Brittany Boyd suffered a near career ending achilles tendon rupture while playing for the New York Liberty. An Oakland native and Cal alumna, Brittany came home to Oakland and eventually connected with B.IO. Dr. Jauregui was so inspired by Brittany's drive and resilience that she created EYI - Empowered Youth Internship, which aims to educate underrepresented youth about professional opportunities at the intersection of sports, technology, and medicine. This piece was commissioned to commemorate the experience. It was created by Sam Rodriguez, an up and coming bay area digital artist.

Core

Patricia Gallespie

2025-01-06

Why we commissioned this piece.

Since 2019 we've been working with Patricia Gallespie. Each quarter she delivers a new botanical sculpture to us. As if cosmically divined, each themed piece always aligns with the happenings and energy at B.I.O. This latest piece, "Core", represents the inward amplification our core values, and outwardly the expanding and nurturing of community. Because at life's core, values and community are what really matter.

Why we selected this book.

In his book "12 Notes", Quincy Jones teaches us life lessons he acquired through his life of struggle and achievement. Timeless principles to live by, the book is truly a wealth of practical wisdom that reminds us of what truly matters in life, and that no one can limit us but ourselves. The book is awe inspiring which is why we added it to our book club in February 2025.

Why we selected this book.

"Clear Thinking" taught us how to be aware of our subconscious defaults that cloud our thinking and result in poor decisions. Sam provides us with examples and actionable insights to overcome our defaults, see things more clearly, and make better decisions that align with our long term goals and values. This was the first book for our book club started in January 2025.
